What is an Emmaus Group?
An Emmaus Group is a gathering of six to fifteen people that meet weekly committed to studying together, praying together, supporting one another, and serving together. Groups meet at various times and in various places throughout the week for sixty to ninety minutes at a time, for a ten week period. Each group is led by a pair of facilitators.
Who can be part of an Emmaus Group?
Anyone and everyone who chooses to.
What are the four pillars of Emmaus Groups?
Each Emmaus Group is ordered around the four pillars of spiritual practices and growth; mutual support and encouragement; common prayer; and service.
What happens at the end of a ten week Emmaus period?
A new series of Emmaus sessions begin. If one chooses to participate in the new session one may do so continuing with one’s own group, or choose to be part of another group.
What will I receive by being part of an Emmaus Group?
You will make friends who will support and encourage you; you will reap the benefits of intentional community; you will grow in your understanding of scripture and how to read scripture; you will have the opportunity to be a blessing to others through your support and encouragement of your fellow Emmaus Group members; and you will help the world be a better place through serving the community.
Does being in an Emmaus Group call for weekly preparation between gatherings?
No.
Who leads Emmaus Groups?
Emmaus Groups are led by trained members of the Christ Church congregation.
What is expected of Emmaus Group participants?
That they participate in their group, demonstrating hospitality and encouragement to one’s fellow Emmaus group members.
What does an Emmaus Group gathering look like?
Each session lasts for up to ninety minutes. First, time is spent in gathering together; followed by a time of simple prayer; followed by a scripture study based on the scripture passages that will be read in worship the following weekend. The session ends with a closing prayer time.
